Mortimer classic at Sterts Theatre
AN ACCLAIMED Cornish theatre company kicks off its 2010 summer season with a heart-warming new version of one of the 20th century's most-loved plays.
A Voyage Round My Father famously chronicled the late Sir John Mortimer's bitter-sweet relationship with his eccentric father.
Now Sterts Theatre's in-house company, based at the unique open-air theatre at Upton Cross on the edge of Bodmin Moor, unveils its own new production of this delightful comedy drama, directed by Steve Jefferies.
Steve said: "It has been a joy to revive this most heart-warming of plays.
"It's based on the influence John Mortimer's blind barrister father had on his life, and there is no doubt his most famous comic creation Rumpole of the Bailey borrowed much from his father's droll comments on life."
In this new production, opening on Thursday, a multi-talented cast play a variety of nearly 40 roles. It can be an education too – you'll learn the best way to drown earwigs, discover why the poet Coleridge was a stranger to the lavatory and be taught to confront the difficulties of unsolicited cake…
A Voyage Round My Father will also be performed at Sterts, between Liskeard and Launceston, on June 18, 23 and 25, July 5 and 6, August 10, 11, 16 and 21 and September 8.
