A woman and her 13-year-old daughter were rescued by firefighters from a tree after their car was swept away by flood water in north Devon.

The mother and child got into difficulties on Thursday at around 7.15pm when their vehicle was washed off the road near the village of Sheepwash and wedged against a tree.

They climbed through the sun roof and on to the tree but rescue helicopter crews were unable to reach them because of branches.

A specialist rescue team from Barnstaple fire station paramedics used a rescue boat to reach the stranded pair.
