THE Government is being asked by a group of local councillors to consider whether it wants to "destroy" a west Cornwall Remploy factory.

In a motion due to be heard by Cornwall Council next week, ministers are being called on to look again at the future of the Long Rock-based business, which employs a number of disabled people.

County Hall will be asked to back the motion, which describes the factory as vital for the local economy while providing invaluable opportunities for those who are most in need. The motion said: "It is to be hoped that ... the Government does not act to close Remploy factories, so adding to the problem of unemployment ... especially that it does not put people out of work in the Penzance area, which figures in several deprivation indices and where there are few alternatives; and that it considers whether it wants to destroy this facility for those suffering disability, now, and for the future," says the motion.

The motion also mentions a dwindling number of manufacturers in the Duchy, "so on that basis alone, the factory should be kept open".
