From New Model Army to supermodel Cindy
Somerset's county town has long been renowned for the good looks of its female inhabitants, but now Taunton can boast one of the world's best-looking women as one of its own.
For an American version of TV's Who Do You Think You Are? has filmed supermodel Cindy Crawford tracing her family tree – and it has taken her back to Taunton in the 17th century.
She might be the classic Midwestern girl-next-door who became an icon of fashion and film in the Eighties, but the Crawford genes in Somerset are traced back to one of the most turbulent times in the county's history.
Cindy Crawford came to Taunton to film the programme, which is being aired this week in the US, to discover that her ancestor was an idealistic Puritan reformer called Thomas Trowbridge who left the West in the 1630s to start a new life in New England, before returning to fight the good fight for Cromwell and the New Model Army.

He settled in Boston, in what was then just a colony.
