THE future of a part-artificial rock pool, which has stood on the sands of a Newquay beach for almost 100 years, could now be secured.

The rock pool on Towan Beach, which has entertained children and families for decades with a paddling area and rocks home to sea creatures, was thought to be under threat.

It is also badly in need of restoration, with the six-feet deep pool almost full with sand.

However, Newquay Town Council has launched a bid to save the attraction.

Speaking at Wednesday's full council meeting, Cllr Joanna Kenny, said: "There was actually a hole made in the wall of the rock pool for health and safety reasons, which obviously hasn't helped things!

"However, this is an important attraction and I propose that ownership is transferred from Restormel Borough Council to Newquay Town Council.

"We should contact the transition committee for One Cornwall and make a stance and say that this is something Newquay Town Council definitely wants to take over."

The proposition was backed unanimously by Newquay Town Councillors.

However, it may take several months before the council are given notification by One Cornwall.

The rock pool had been subject to much speculation over the past five years, with readers contacting the Newquay Guardian, fearing the pool may be 'filled in' by Restormel Borough Council.

Back in 2005, it was reported that the district council were worried about the financial impact of any legal claims arising from accidents at the rock pool.

However, the news caused public outcry, with residents demanding that the pool be kept open.

The pool was designed to fill up with sea water when the tide came and remain full when it receded.

Lady Helen Long, who lives on the island above the pool said: "It has been a safe swimming/paddling pool for families for decades, and it is a great pity that it has fallen into disrepair and been silted up.

"We would certainly like to see it up and running again for all the little ones to enjoy.

"The big problem is maintenance and health and safety. It would be good if the town council could take it over, but once it was their responsibility, there would obviously be a fair cost involved in maintenance, as it would have to be kept to a safe standard.

"We would oppose any proposal to enlarge or alter it in any way, but would absolutely support any move to keep it as it is and in good repair. The kids love it!

"It was always good for 'rock pooling' and catching tiddlers, and it was somewhere for the tinies to swim with their armbands on, safe from the waves and the currents. We would like to see them enjoying themselves there again."

And David Waines, from the nearby Blue Reef Aquarium, commented: "The decision is ultimately the new authority's to make, but I would be very interested to see what happens to it if Newquay Town Council does take it over."
