CONSTRUCTION bosses behind a cutting edge, cliff-top hotel have vowed their new building will get pulses racing.

The Scarlet, a 37-bedroom hotel perched on cliffs overlooking Mawgan Porth beach, will open for business in summer 2009 and will take less than 18 months to build.

With "not much change from £10 million" construction chiefs said the hotel will lead the way in innovative design and eco-friendly technology – with solar panels, a biomass boiler and super insulated walls.

Replacing the old Tredragon Hotel, bosses said the new build will see "something special come to the area".

During a guided tour of the site, Peter Sutton, from architects Harrison Sutton Partnership, said: "The building of this hotel is so very different from other hotels; conventional hotels are very boring – this certainly is not.

"A German firm has come on board and this has been built in a similar way to a Huf Haus and yet at the same time is not constrained with our design.

"We are delighted that we were able to find a contractor that was willing to take on the project and fully embrace what we were trying to achieve with our curved walls and very different design."

The site is adjacent to the Bedruthan Steps Hotel – and the owners are the backers behind The Scarlet project.

The new hotel will be for adults only and will offer bar, restaurant and spa facilities.

But Mr Sutton said: "This is all about the view; the hotel has been built around the view and every room you go into, whether it be the bar or restaurant – everything is designed to maximise that view."

Much of the timber-frame building will have a glazed finish, giving guests the opportunity to look out on Mawgan Porth beach.

Simon Baldwin, development director for the project, said: "This hotel will be about total relaxation for adults. You come here and you want to feel like you are on holiday and be able to do what you want.

"The spa facilities here will be absolutely fantastic; it will be a very spiritual, open place where you can relax. When guests come here, we want them to live life at a different pace."

The Scarlet has not increased the height of the former Tredragon Hotel, with engineers digging down into the cliff face.

More than 10,000 cubic feet of earth was removed from the site – equalling 800 lorry loads – in order to dig the hotel into the cliff face.

Four individual rooms will also stand out from the crowd, with their own private gardens.

A spiral staircase will lead guests up to a special 'crow's nest' room filled with cushions, which will offer panoramic views of the coastline.

The showpiece of the hotel will be its eco-friendly technology.

Solar panels will be used along with a wood chip, biomass boiler, highly insulated walls and ceilings and rainwater recycling and harvesting.
