New limit in bid to slow down drivers
CONCERNS have been raised over a new 20mph speed limit introduced in Millbrook.
Tonny Steenhagen has written to the parish council asking it to justify the decision.

SPEED LIMIT: Village of Millbrook saw a 20mph speed limit last week.
"The wish and need for a blanket 20mph zone in all of Millbrook is based on flawed and scientifically insignificant evidence," he said. "I drive along most of those roads at 20 to 30mph, a perfectly adequate speed for those roads."
He agreed parts of the village required effective traffic-calming measures but said the 20mph limit should not stretch the entire length of the village.

Mr Steenhagen led a petition against the speeding restrictions in February and claims there was too little public consultation prior to the limit being imposed.
Parish council vice- chairman Sharon Lewis said: "There has been continuing consultation and discussion since 2008 regarding this issue." She said the village had supported the introduction of the limit: "We have had no other objections at all.
"Councillors have received nothing but praise this week."
Miss Lewis insisted the restriction was a necessary safety measure. "A lot of houses run along the road and many people have young children."
Speed was a problem in Millbrook and she hoped the new signs would deter motorists from speeding through the village.
The council said other measures had been considered, such as zebra crossings, but a 20mph limit was seen as the most effective.
Miss Lewis said the council had worked with the Highways Agency to explore the options available.
At a parish council meeting, one member said: "We need to respond to this but we need to give the new speed limit time to break in and see what happens."
The parish council voted to review the reduced speed in six months' time to analyse its effectiveness.

“Good job councillors - now the children can play in the road, in spite of all those nasty polluting cars. And their parents won't have to take responsibilty for them either.

Why not reduce it to 5 mph, just to make it extra extra safe...?”

“Why would the Highways Agency be involved? They're not responsible for this road.
I hope the parish council have taken into account the increased risk to health from increased traffic pollution that this change in speed limit will create.”
