A COMMEMORATIVE stone has been unveiled at Camelford to mark the 750th anniversary of the town being granted its charter in 1259 by Richard, Earl of Cornwall and which in effect marked the transition of Camelford from a village to a town.

Residents have worked hard to raise the money for the commemorative stone in addition to winning grant funding from Awards for All and the Cornwall Community Fund.

The stone, which is sited at the entrance to Enfield Park, also has space on it so that other major events in the town can be recorded on it for posterity.

“Interesting to note that the Charter was granted by Richard Earl of Cornwall and not the then King of England. That is because Cornwall has a separate constitution from England and still does.”
