ONE of Falmouth's most prominent and longest running empty shops has been given a new lease of life.

A new Wilkinson store has opened at the former Woolworth's in Market Street.

Mayor Geoffrey Evans helped Wilkinson's chief executive Stuart Mitchell and RNLI mascot Stormy Stan cut the ribbon on Thursday morning.

The shop had been empty for three years and town manager Richard Gates said: "This is a major step forward for the town, especially as the site has been vacant for so long and it has always been the most common question raised regarding the town."

The store has taken on 50 full and part-time staff.

Assistant manager Paul Featherstone said customers had been trying to get into the store for a week before the opening.

"Things are certainly going very well. The store fits very well with Falmouth and there's plenty of space available."

The store has chosen the RNLI as its charity to support over the next year.
