Newlyn author pens new book inspired by family drama
WHILE sorting through his dead mother's belongings, a Newlyn author was inspired to pen his latest work.
Colin Bacon was moved by his own experiences of uncovering an intriguing family history to write new book, Spibey.
Although he has invented new characters and an original plot, Mr Bacon drew on a controversial revelation to form the outline of his wartime mystery.
"When my mother died I was going through her stuff," he said.

"I was looking particularly for a gilded penny with an engraving on – I wanted to find out more about it."
The penny unlocked a previously hidden part of his recent ancestry, with tales of war, illegitimacy and drama entwined within it.
"I remember my mother talking about parts of the story – after exploring more I decided to take it further and write an adaptation on what could have happened."
Mr Bacon, who wrote biography Vivian And I, a remarkable memoir of the legendary Vivian Mackerrell, stressed his new book is only loosely based on his own accounts and realities, though noted the personal aspect to it.
"There was always a story but my mother would never give me more details," he explained. "There was something there in the family."
The result of Mr Bacon's imagination is a tale of three siblings' discovery of family events and happenings; running alongside their own problems.
Although set in the Midlands, where Mr Bacon was born, he added he sought inspiration for his descriptions on rambles around the Penwith coastline.
"It takes place somewhere else, but I get ideas from walks in the countryside," he said.
"I take it in and use it. It aids descriptions – and one place transposes to another.
"My window overlooks Mount's Bay. I sit there and watch the fishing boats."
Spibey comes out at the end of next month, and Mr Bacon will be signing the novel in Penzance on its release.
