CORNISH GUARDIAN NEWQUAY LEAGUE:

The Premiership

Zodiac Interiors 0, Real Sosobad 1

Zodiac Interiors needed a point to be certain of winning the league and they started well enough creating chances without ever threatening the goal.

The break came when the Zodiac keeper threw the ball straight to a Real player who took his time to compose himself and then thrashed the ball past the luckless Berry in goal.

Zodiac upped their game but Dave Pendleton had his men well marshalled from the Real goal. When the shots came Dave was equal to them and Real held out to inflict Zodiacs' third defeat of the season.

The Sixes 8, Mitchell 1

The Sixes gave themselves a great chance of stealing the title from Zodiac Interiors by beating a Mitchell side that are all set for life in the Championship.

Mitchell put up a good fight to begin with but once Dan O'Callaghan struck, the goals came flooding in. Dan scored four, with Lee Paxton (2), Dillon Conran and Lee Pascoe also on target.

Tom Strang struck for Mitchell but by then the game was beyond rescue.

The Tigers 4, Goonhavern 3

Goonhavern started brightly and took a deserved lead through the powerful Tom Brookes. Worse was to come for the Tigers in the second half when Mark Walters struck twice in quick succession to give his side an impressive 3-0 lead.

The Tigers started to shake themselves awake and when Matt Hodgetts struck to make it 3-1 they still had much of the second half to play.

Ben Currah made it 3-2 before Pete Ling equalised with a couple of minutes left on the clock. With moments to go Tom Currah worked his way through the Goonhavern defence to set up Pete Ling for a last gasp winner.

The Championship

Firetrader 2, Dream Sessions 3

Dream Sessions started well and were soon 2-0 up thanks to a rare strike from Gary Roberts. Seb Bzdak doubled the lead for Dream Sessions to leave them firmly in control of the match.

That was until Rob Selby scored twice in quick succession to level the match. Both teams attacked without much care for defence and eventually Seb Bzdak found the required quality to regain the lead for his side and win them the match.

Darwin's Dirty Dozen 2, Raiders 1

Both teams started well but it was Raiders' Mike Hodgetts who struck first to give his side the lead. Darwin's Dirty Dozen are made of strong stuff these days and it didn't take them long to get back into the match thanks to a fine piece of skill and finish from Richard Tutt.

Darwin's continued to dominate the match and when Roy Whale struck to give them the lead it was no more than they deserved.

Darwin's held on to win the match and book themselves a spot in the play-offs.

Ugandan Dollars 0, Dream Sessions 0

Ugandan Dollars are possibly the hardest side to beat in both leagues at the moment and they proved it again against a Dream Sessions side that were well set up to score goals.

Ugandan Dollars know how to defend and if they can start picking up a few more goals they could challenge for the title next season.

Raiders 2, Cosmos 1

Raiders booked their place in the play-offs thanks to a well deserved win against a Cosmos side that were not at their best.

Jake Hodgetts opened the scoring for Raiders but his effort was pegged back by the powerful Adrian Daniels.

The second half could have gone either way but it was Tom Bleacham who scored for Raiders to give them the lead and win them the match.

EEC 1, Busby Babes 3

Both teams knew that victory would give them the title and when Tom Berry let the ball slip though his legs it looked as though it was going to be EEC's night.

EEC could have extended their lead, but they couldn't convert their chances and they were made to pay when Josh Harris struck to level the match. EEC hit the bar before Josh struck again to make it 2-1.

EEC continued to press but Tom Berry made up for his earlier error with a host of saves before EEC were made to pay as Josh Harris completed his hat-trick to win the match and the Championship for his side.

Golf

NEWQUAY GOLF CLUB:

With round 11 it was the penultimate round of the Saturday winter league at Newquay Golf Club with all the contenders looking to secure some serious points.

In division one this was ably achieved by Bert Harper and Ashley Fieldhouse, who came in with a winning 41 points to be four points clear of Andy Hancock and Jamie Green in second, with Shane Hickling partnering Rob Kellythorn for third place with 36 points.

In division two Eric Thomas teamed up with Sean Rooney for an excellent 41 points to win by two points from Craig Stevenson and his partner Sam Tyldesley. This pairing were in turn four points clear of third-placed John Deacon and Guy Westaway.

Monday was to be the Gerry Marcelis Cup for the Seniors competition but, with the threat of horrendous weather, according to various weather forecasts, it was decided to call the event off, postponing to a later date.

As is the way of such decisions, having rung around to tell as many entrants as possible before setting out for the club, at the end of making the calls the rain stopped and a few brave souls ventured out onto the course anyway and in the event, although in semi-arctic conditions, a rain free round occurred.

On Wednesday, which is usually a roll up day for the Seniors, a group of 12 members headed to St Austell Golf Club for a reciprocal game due to Newquay being used for an Alliance match all day.

This again was in cold conditions and on starting the game we had to play off temporary greens but by mid-morning we were on the proper greens. Dave Phillips took the spoils and is now convinced that temporary greens should be used all the time.

Next Monday is a Monday Winter league game with a healthy number of entrants, 32, hopefully teeing off and looking forward to at least a dry round.

This week the 30 ladies teed up for a fun competition, playing 15 holes, in teams of three. On the first five holes all three scores had to count, on the next five holes only two scores counted and on the final five holes one score counted. A score of 60 points would have achieved level twos.

The weather, while dry, was bitterly cold but it was good to be able to get out and play. I think we were all surprised at how fast the greens were.

Winning this competition with 53 points was the trio of Chris Smith, Anne Berryman and Pat Thom. Kay Willetts, Rita Carhart and Anne Poole were second with 51 points just beating Pat Greenwood, Judith Reseigh and Sue Williams who had 50 points.

The week before, in torrential rain, a team of five ladies took part in the Mail on Sunday competition against Trevose.

Despite a home draw, something that we haven't had for a few years, the Newquay Ladies lost 4-1, although each individual match was quite close.
