Newquay lifeguard 'Mitch' will surf for UK at European Championships
NEWQUAY lifeguard James (Mitch) Mitchell, has been selected to surf for the UK in the European Surf Championships taking place in the Azores next month (12 to 22 September).
Mitch who works for the RNLI as a lifeguard on Fistral beach in Newquay was picked after taking the top spot in Men’s Senior Division in the English National Surfing Championships in May.
Mitch, 34, lives in Newquay and has been surfing for more than 20 years. He is currently looking for sponsorship to help him with the cost of travelling out to the Azores for the competition.
Mitch says: “To be selected to surf for my country is such an honour and an opportunity I can’t pass up. Unfortunately as a sport, surfing receives no government funding so I am desperately seeking a local business or individuals who might be interested in helping me raise the £1,200 needed to get to the Azores and be able to compete.

“I love the type of big waves that the Azores is famed for and have been pretty pleased with how I have been surfing recently; winning my category at the English Nationals has really given me a boost. So I think I have a good chance of taking gold.”
