ROYAL Mail has stopped delivering post to a street in Newquay after a postman was attacked by a pet dog – twice.

In the latest incident, bosses say an employee was bitten by the vicious mutt last week as he walked from door to door on Pydar Close.

Now they have insisted the safety of their front line staff must come first and have instructed home owners to pick up their post from the East Street delivery office until the "matter is resolved".

Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden said: "Unfortunately, dog attacks are a hazard faced by our postmen and women every working day and our first priority as an employer is to ensure the welfare and safety of our people, who provide a valuable service to our customers. Royal Mail seeks the co-operation of our customers and we encourage the public to take responsibility for keeping their pets under control.

“Yes it's an inconvenience stopping the whole street but if the dog is loose in the street, without resorting to arming postmen with a cricket bat with nails in what else are RM to do? Assume responsibility for your pets' actions, we don't care if your dog is a softie, it can still cause grave injury to people. I have been bitten by half a dozen family dogs over the years, thankfully nothing more than was treatable with a jab and a bandage, only to see that the owners thought that doing nothing to rectify the situation was the correct course of action. Now the law has been changed and dog owners are responsible for dog attacks on their property and the government want to reduce compensation for victims of crime, I foresee many private prosecutions until people start taking these attacks seriously.”

“The owner should be cautioned and asked to pick up their mail from a centre there is no sense in stopping mail to the whole street.”

“Dont blame them at all. I used to be a milkman (thats someone who delivers milk to your door incase your of an age who never heard of one). I lost count The amount of times I requested the owners to keep thire dogs in until delivery was done or arange an alternative place.
One dog bit me 3 times, I rang the door the woman came to the door with the dog in her arms. It was going mental at me trying to bite me again. Her words were " he wouldn't hurt a soul".
Some owners just dont listen or dont care.”
