Newquay man killed crossing road just minutes after celebrating pal's birthday
A NEWQUAY man was killed crossing the road on Sunday – just minutes after celebrating his friend's birthday with pals in a town pub.
Named locally as Daniel Ciupak, 25, he died after he was struck by a car in an alleged hit-and-run incident on Henver Road at 2am.
He had been with around 15 others at the Godolphin Arms, where they had hired a room for a friend's birthday party.
The pub's owner Margaret Ashwood told the Cornish Guardian the group had booked the venue after having a good time at the same lad's birthday party last year.

"It's heartbreaking," she said. "They'd all had such a nice time.
"Some of them had arrived about 6pm to set up and the rest arrived around 8pm. They were all having so much fun and then something dreadful like this happens."
A 23-year-old man from Penzance has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on police bail until November 18.
Police are still appealing for witnesses, and say because of the large number of people in town for the Boardmasters festival it is likely several saw what happened.
The victim, a Polish national, was struck by a red Chrysler PT Cruiser, officers have confirmed.
The vehicle was found abandoned a short time later.
Mr Ciupak was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro but died a short time later.
Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call police on 101 quoting log number 159.
