Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium closed after waves destroy part of sea wall and promenade
NEWQUAY’S Towan Beach Promenade has been closed to protect public safety after huge waves destroyed part of the structure.
The promenade is home to the popular Blue Reef Aquarium, which is also closed today.
Staff are picking up the pieces after high tides and strong winds combined to cause further damage to the building and also create a large crack in the sea wall outside.
A spokesman for the visitor attraction said today: “The sea wall has gone on the opposite end of the promenade.

“A crack [on the sea wall] that appeared after the last storm has now been made substantially bigger. We don’t want people coming down onto the promenade and being put in danger, so we have taken the decision to close the aquarium and the promenade today.”
He said the may consider opening tomorrow – but could not say for sure at this stage due to the forecasted high tides on Monday morning.
“We are also waiting for Cornwall Council’s structural engineers to come down and have a look at the sea wall and the damage and get their expert opinion before making a decision,” he said.
