Niche crab processing company hatches plans for the future
BORN out of two long-established Newlyn firms, a new crab-fishing and processing company – launched only a few weeks ago – is set to make its mark.
The Real Cornish Crab Company is owned by husband and wife team Mark and Emma Rowse while the company is managed by Mark Dyer, who himself has worked in the crab processing sector for many years in his family firm.
Operating from newly-refurbished premises on the Stable Hobba industrial estate, the Rowses hope to forge their own little niche in the crab and lobster business as they claim to be the only company in the UK which can provide total traceability for their crab.
The Rowses own a fleet of four crabbers which provides all their crab – up to two tonnes of live crab a week – which is guaranteed to have been caught in Cornish waters.

This is then processed under Mark Dyer's experienced eye by the four-strong processing staff and sold fresh – "from pot to platter" – in 24 hours.
"People are becoming more aware and interested in where their food has come from," said Emma. "And I think we are unique in the country in having complete traceability.
"We will soon be putting a QR Crab-Trax code on our crab pots which, when scanned, will show the customer all sorts of details including on which boat the crab was caught, where it was caught and even the name of the skipper."
The Real Cornish Crab Company's products are all fresh and do not go through the pasteurisation process.
As a result of this they are much prized by local restaurants.
The Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn, The Coldstreamer at Gulval and De Wynn's Coffee Shop in Falmouth are just some of the eateries which take crab from The Real Cornish Crab Company.
Fish merchants Stevenson & Sons and Trelawney Fish are also customers.
And farther afield, the firm makes regular deliveries to fishmongers in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
Mark Rowse is also proud of the fact that one of his vessels – The Intuition – has been nominated for Acrunet accreditation.
"The Intuition is one of only 16 crabbers throughout Europe to be chosen for possible accreditation," he said.
"The scheme looks at things like quality control, responsible fishing, good practice and how the crab is stored – and we hope to get our certificate sometime later this year."
