A HUGE number of volunteers turned out in force at Holywell Bay near Newquay to collect rubbish from the beach and help raise money for the surf lifesaving club.

Children from Cubert School were among those who turned up at the beach clean event organised by Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club.

Those who took part managed to collect bags and bags of rubbish from the beach and dunes, which was then taken away thanks to support from the local parish council.

A spokeswoman for Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club commented: "The Nippers undertook the clean-up to tidy up their beach at the end of a busy season, showing respect and affection for their local beach and its natural environment.

"The event was staged as part of the national Beach Awareness and Clean Cornwall Week.

"It was supported by Booker Cash and Carry, and Surfers Against Sewage."

The Nippers managed to raise a fantastic £300 for the Club through the event, and this will go towards the purchase of new equipment.
