Nowell retains place in England squad for Scotland clash
Cornwall’s Jack Nowell has retained his place in the England squad for Saturday’s Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland at Murrayfield.
The 20-year-old Exeter Chiefs wing, from Newlyn, endured a mixed debut as England suffered a 26-24 defeat to France in their opening game of the 2014 Six Nations, but is hoping to feature in Saturday’s second match of this year’s competition.
The England squad returned to Pennyhill Park on Sunday evening to prepare for Saturday’s match, with Nowell hoping to have done enough to keep his place in the side.
Nowell said: “For me, there were always going to be nerves because this is something I have wanted for so long.
“To be honest, I’ve come off gutted with a few mistakes I made and obviously the end result, but at the same time I’m still excited that I was out there playing with some of the boys that I have played against this season and last season. I’m just looking forward to next week, and fingers crossed I can get another start against Scotland.”
Gloucester’s Jonny May suffered a fracture to his nose in the defeat to France and will see a specialist today for further assessment.
A decision on his availability for selection against Scotland will be made following that examination.
Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints) suffered a bruised cheekbone but no structural damage and will be available for selection.
Under the Elite Player Squad agreement England will have 33 players in camp with Freddie Burns returning to the senior squad following his two appearances for England Saxons, while Stephen Myler (Northampton), Rob Webber (Bath) and Richard Wigglesworth (Saracens) remain with their Aviva Premiership clubs.
