Open day to feature county's first community food-growing group
CORNWALL'S first community food-growing group is holding an open day on Sunday at St Kew Highway, near Wadebridge.
Camel Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a local food project growing fresh, seasonal vegetables for its members to share.
It is holding a series of open farm Sunday events between 11am and 4pm including guided tours of the site and family fun featuring scarecrow making, activity trail, bee nest construction, lettuce planting and a sheep-shearing demonstration.
The group also has a stand in the Cornwall Food and Farming Pavilion at the Royal Cornwall Show, courtesy of the Soil Association and the Plunkett Foundation, both leading players in Making Local Food Work.
Camel CSA chairman Ron Mucklestone said: "We look forward to meeting visitors at both events.
"It's only a matter of weeks before our members reap the benefits and get delivery of the first weekly vegetable boxes.
"Our volunteer teams have been working really hard on the field in all weathers.
"We owe a special thanks to our three volunteer expert growers – Jeremy Brown, Jane Mellowship and Mark Norman – who have taken valuable time out from their own businesses to provide us with the expert help and guidance needed to make this project a success.
"There's so much talk at the moment about the importance of providing local food, eating seasonally and saving food miles.
"This is exactly what we're doing."
Visitors to the open day and the stand at the show can talk to the project's enthusiastic volunteers, find out what they are growing, and discover the benefits of getting involved. They will also be able to find out more about the new Penwith Community Agriculture Project in West Cornwall and the Soil Association's role in promoting both schemes.
Camel CSA is located beside the A39, behind St Kew Harvest Farm Shop, at St Kew Highway, near Wadebridge.
