THE UK's first pasty festival was hailed a success – despite a distinct lack of the favoured snack being available due to a last-minute hitch. Hundreds of people enjoyed music and the lively street market at the Cornish Pasty Festival in Redruth, selling Cornish hampers, jams, cakes and pasties. Although many shops got into the spirit there was some criticism of a lack of local traders' stalls. Redruth Mayor Judy Davidson described the day as her "dream come true". She said: "The bake-off was a huge success run entirely by volunteers and 460 pasties were made by 2pm. "We have got a lot to improve and we need more stalls, especially people selling pasties. That was a major hiccup. But the general atmosphere was wonderful and there was not a pasty to be found by 2.30pm."
