To youngsters brought up on realistic video games, a Dalek might resemble a giant coffee pot with a sink plunger and curling tongs sticking out of its breastplate.

But when the pitiless cyborg monster hit TV screens in the 1960s hit show Doctor Who, an entire generation of children dived for cover behind the sofa.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum, at RNA Yeovilton in Somerset, will unveil its two-day Dalek Invasion show on August 18.

The rare Dalek, which is valued at £50,000, was last seen in public in the 1980s. It will be on display with around 20 examples alongside an original feature film costume belonging to the equally fearsome Cyberman.

Other attractions for sci-fi fans include the evil scientist and creator of the Daleks, Davros, as well as Ice Warriors, Pig Slave, Weeping Angel and many other characters from the cult BBC series.

Children are encouraged to wear fancy dress and join in a variety of family activities, including an obstacle race.
