Overall not very wet November
NOVEMBER – A quiet spell followed by gales, rain and floods The first four days saw cold, fresh to strong W to NW winds and some heavy showers with hail; this cold start followed by a prolonged benign and uneventful spell. All change on the 22nd, the SSW wind became strong to gale force as an active cold front approached, with gusts of more than 60mph at Land's End and Culdrose.
There was, very briefly, some intense rain and large hail. In Penzance around 7.5mm fell in five minutes from 2pm to 2.05pm. On the 24th persistent rain arrived at 7am, became very heavy at times and continued until 9pm. A total of 53mm (just over two inches) fell during this period resulting in flooding at Newlyn and several other places in west Cornwall.
In the evening the NW wind increased and again there were gusts to 60mph in exposed spots. A further 18mm fell in 24 hours. The NNW wind again reached gale force in exposed spots and was combined with spells of moderate-to-heavy rain amounting to another 15.3mm. Despite the floods the month as a whole was not exceptionally wet. November is the wettest month in Penzance and seven of the past 20 Novembers have been wetter. The problems were caused by the bulk of the month's rainfall falling in one week. October was just as wet with 197.9mm, making the total for the two months a quite exceptional 392.5mm.
