South West farms and rural businesses seeking to save money on pumping costs and use natural water sources could benefit from a major innovation thanks to Source for Business, a new business support service from South West Water.

It has announced a new working partnership with PAPA Utility Services, based in Bude, to offer customers an end-to-end service that can pay back in as little as 12 months.

By using a natural watercourse such as a stream or river, a PAPA pump can provide water to the places where it is needed the most, with minimal maintenance and no running costs.

It uses the flow of the watercourse to pump water over large distances, with an average supply of 50 litres per minute. The greater the gravitational drop, the more water can be pumped up to 30 times the height.

With natural water in abundant supply due to heavy rainfall, it makes business sense to tap into this resource not only as it is free, but it will help to reduce flooding. Indeed, meetings with the Environment Agency are planned to present PAPA pumps as a solution to draw off water from overflowing rivers to storage ponds for farmers to use when water is scarce.

Head of business development at Source for Business David Roberts said: "There is a proven track record with this revolutionary technology and we are confident this will offer value for money and low-cost water-saving solutions for our business customers.

"We want to present a no-cost energy solution to replace the traditional fuel or electric pumps.

"The PAPA solution is simple to install with minimal maintenance and reduces the demand for mains water. We hope that agricultural businesses, campsites, leisure facilities and large estates will see what an incredible benefit it can be."

Founder and inventor of the PAPA pump, Philip Selwyn said: "PAPA has formed a strong partnership with Source for Business to help local communities, farmers and businesses reduce their energy costs, increase sustainability and help reduce water pollution throughout the UK."
