POLL: Marazion is runner up in list of best places to own a second home

“The thing to remember with all these top 30 polls is that they are all written by people whom have never been to the place in question: this particular poll is just the latest of a long series of similar polls printed recently by the Times. We've had the top 30 best towns, coolest towns, best towns to bring up your children, best seaside towns, most friendly towns, most welcoming towns etc etc… pretty much every town in the UK has appeared on one or more of the lists at some point. The reason Marazion hasn't appeared in anything until now is because it is none of the things mentioned above, and the fact that it appears in the best place to own a second home list is concrete evidence that the polls are just a nonsense. Marazion has very few houses with off-street parking: the sort of person whom does the school-run in a large black 4x4 and has their Waitrose shopping delivered twice a week by Ocado isn't the sort of person whom wants to park a mile away from their second home, then lug a matching set of Gucci luggage and two-weeks of shopping half way up Fore Street to a nice little cottage. No. For that reason Marazion has and will only ever have very few second homes, it does however, have a surfeit of holiday-lets – nice little cottages used as income generators for wealthy local people. Cornish people! Every second home and holiday-let in Cornwall was once or is still owned by a Cornish person whom sold it to the highest bidder or rents it out in the summer-months only, because they make more money that way. The house prices in Marazion although a bit higher than Penzance are much lower than many other places Cornwall and in the UK. The £500,000 mentioned is just more nonsense:- there are currently 20 properties for sale in Marazion most of which are under £300,000, some as low as £150,000, a cottage near my house has just sold for £174,000, only one house is over £500,000 and that's a large 6- bedroomed guest house. Cornwall and the Cornish people have the housing problems we've created ourselves, the answer is to build new warm efficient homes not to have a pop at the rich people who spend two-weeks a year freezing by the log-burner in damp-ridden whitewashed pile of faux-utopia.”

“My heart sank on reading this article. Encouragement from the Times for greedy acquisitiveness by people who somehow have the money to spend up to half a million on second homes is the last thing Cornwall needs. "A dreamy stretch of white sand" indeed. Dream on, locals.”
