PORTHLEVEN'S Cornwall councillor Andrew Wallis says he is having to sort fact from rumours surrounding a potentially major housing development in the port.

A consultation exercise is currently under way for up to 101 homes at Shrubberies Hill, many of them affordable.

But locals are also worried about the effect on the local and wider area.

Mr Wallis said this week he was "slightly worried" so many rumours were circulating and that he was doing his best to explain the facts on both sides of the arguments.

“It's this part of any comment that always concerns me, "..many of them affordable.". The other houses at market cost (i.e. unaffordable/too expensive for many local people) will be attacting people from outside Porthleven or Cornwall with more cash. Cornish coastal towns are attractive to many people and this keeps house prices high, so it just defeats the object of trying make houses available at a price local families can afford, unless the number of second homes/holiday lets in Cornwall are restricted to a small percentage of the total housing stock (and ideally the number of expensive large houses). Alternatively cover Cornwall in houses in order to keep up with demand.”
