FORMER Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown arrived in Cornwall to help kick-start the party's election campaign.

Lord Ashdown joined Cornish Lib-Dem MPs and prospective parliamentary candidates in a bid to galvanise support.

Lord Ashdown is a well known face in the Westcountry, having been Yeovil MP from 1983 to 2001 and party leader for 11 years until 1999.

He said the Lib-Dems had a good track record in Cornwall and would continue to offer the county a real voice.

"Only the Lib-Dems will give Cornwall a fair deal. Our strong team of local MPs has a real record of action in delivering change that has already made a difference," he said.

"On healthcare, housing and water bills, it's Lib-Dem MPs who have a record to be proud of. Now it is only the Lib-Dems who have the ideas for a fairer future for Cornwall.

"My message is simple. Don't just listen to the promises, look at the record. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know where, for the best interests of the Westcountry, you would be best to put your vote."

The Lib-Dem team paid a visit to St Columb Minor Primary School, in the new constituency of St Austell and Newquay, to highlight pledges for a fair deal for Cornwall schools.

Lord Ashdown was joined by Lib-Dem South West campaign leader Julia Goldsworthy, MP for Falmouth and Camborne, North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson, Steve Gilbert, PPC for Newquay and St Austell), South East Cornwall PPC Karen Gillard and Terrye Teverson, PPC for Truro and Falmouth.

The team was met by members of the student council who showed them a number of activities including games, stalls and sports.

Mr Gilbert said his party offered real hope for Cornwall.

"The Lib-Dems are the only party at this election who offer the real change that Cornwall needs," he added. "The Conservatives are touting the myth that a Conservative MP in Cornwall will be able to put our case at the heart of Government, but the last time Cornwall had a Conservative MP and a Conservative Government we got the most unfair deal we ever had.

"They left us with the highest water bills in the country, under-funded schools and a housing crisis that lingers today.

"We are offering real change on the issues that matter. An extra £22 million for Cornwall's schools, a fair tax system that would take an extra 20,000 people out of income tax altogether and investment in much needed local infrastructure."

“The Lib Dems are a poor excuse of a party with a poor excuse of a leader. They do not speak for those of us in the Westcountry and are still relying on Paddy Ashdown, the once leader of the opoposite of the opposite to save them from being completely side lined.

David Cameron is the only real contender for the Prime Minister role and I can not wait for him to enter No 10, and watch the left wing liberalists faces as he washes away their plans of emptying the prisons and having those of us who work fund those who are able bodied and choose not to. Bring on May 4th!”

“The Lib dems have done nothing for cornwall apart from putting the council tax up on a local level.
they are so unpopular that they have to use Ashdown to try and drum up support”

“Yes the privatization of the water companies was a bad idea and left us ultimately with higher bills. But the conservatives have not been in power for 13 years. Labour and the Lib Dems did nothing to change this in that time. Infact water bill have risen even more in the last few years. So what is Paddy Ashdown saying here? They have done nothing to bring down our water bills while in power in the West Country, and have not offered any proposal to bring these bills down. Forget what happened over 13 years ago and remember the inaction of today,s Lib Dems. They do nothing for us.”

“:| Many notables have Tim, but when everything is 'bubbling' along no one ever wants to listen. The Lib-Dems were only wise AFTER the event.

When the Lib-Dems held the seat in the Cheadle by-election, Fri 15th Jul 2005, 'Errol' wrote in the vernacular,

"AR ANTY LILS BLOKE RECCONS ITS EASY TA SEE ¿OW ADOFF ¿ITLER DUN SA WELL . . WEN NU-LABER LOSES DERE DEPOSIT. .

. .¿EE RECCONS DA TORIES ULL PROBLY AV TA WAIT TILL GORDY¿S BUBBLE BURSTS. .

    . . . IT AINT FAR OFF EE RECCONS. . . . .

. . TRUBBLE IS PEEPLE ONLYREMEMBERS DA BAD BITS. . .

And in March 2006 I wrote:

In my view the whole housing bubble wouldn¿t exist today if they hadn¿t played havoc with the Stock Market, by making Banking so profitable. . . . The Money Business has been made the only commercial operation without any risk to the operators holding their ¿Stock in Trade¿. ; save perhaps Oil and other Energy stocks. And British manufacturing has been almost ¿deflated¿ off the map. . . . . . But I¿m not really sure just how much longer this corrupt policy can be sustained. . . It¿s really no different than Pyramid selling. . Eventually there won¿t be enough people able to sustain the debt. . Just look at what is happening in the Health Service. . . . A substantial cut in Interest rates will soon be inevitable I believe. . .

But back in May 2001 I wrote:

    Dear Editor,
How depressing it is that so many commentators in the media who influence opinion have no real understanding of a market economy.
A quarter point cut in base lending was greeted with gleeful anticipation, ignoring completely the relevance of this rate set against an inflation rate of 2% and falling.
¿Not all that tempts, Your wand¿ing eyes, and heedless hearts, Is lawful prize; nor all that glisters gold.¿ Wrote poet Thomas Gray.
Japan has a zero lending rate but has chronic deflation, meaning their bankers are happy to let others carry the deflationary loss whilst protecting themselves.
Similarly our borrowers are being seduced into contracts that are designed to make the bankers rich.
Inflation is always portrayed as the absolute evil, but its capricious vagaries will never match the debilitating consequences of a deflating economy.

Interest rates were cut to 5.25% at that time with inflation at 2% and FALLING. . The 3% ¿Real¿ rate apparently adopted by the Bank of England monetary committee since ¿independence¿, was clearly designed to favour the Bankers, and not in the best interest of borrowers or the country in my view.

Each time the Tories tried to warn everyone they were accused of trying to talk the country down. . As they are again now.”

“The problem is I am not sure who I will be voting for.

I am most definitely NOT voting for the Lib Dems because of their awful record running Cornwall County Council, or Labour because they have completely ruined the economy of this country.

It will either be UKIP, MK or the Tories, depending on who comes up with the best solutions for the enormous problems Cornwall faces.

Please UKIP, MK and Tories, let us know your policies for Cornwall.

Paddy, don't waste your time, your party had your chance and made a complete mess up, as your MP's will find out when the election is called.

Claiming for a rocking chair and a hairdryer on the taxpayer. What a disgrace and an insult to all hard working Cornishmen and women, who are struggling on low wages.”

“:| @TimV. . . Tim we all knew the Lib-Dems would be against the War. . The EU has always been Anti-American, so what else did we expect. . But they were certainly NOT The first to expose the Pyramid of Debt that was creating the Bubble, or to forecast the inevitable consequences. . . Best Charles”
