Paper starts a campaign to get crossing reopened
THE Cornishman launched a campaign to have the Long Rock Mexico pedestrian crossing reopened at the start of the month.
An open letter to Cornwall Council addressed the most significant issues for Long Rock residents following the closure of the much-used walkway to the beach.
The crossing was closed at the request of Cornwall's deputy coroner in December 2012 following the death of Jeanette Nicholls at the site the previous year.
The Friends of Long Rock Mexico Crossing (FLRMC) had led the campaign up to that point and attracted more than 150 objections to the permanent closure application from Cornwall Council.
In addition, a petition was signed by more than 98 per cent of Long Rock residents.
Following a decision by Cornwall Council Cabinet in November, the fate of the crossing is now likely to rest on the outcome of a public inquiry.
