The streets of Truro have been flooded after manhole covers ‘popped off’, leaving local shops inches deep in water.

Subway Sandwiches on Victoria Square had more than six inches of water behind the counter and staff from across the South West rushed to the premises on ‘damage control’.

“We’ve been flooded really badly,” said Scott Penhaligon. “We’re just on damage control right now and having the water pumped out.

“Hopefully we can get the place sanitised and reopen on Friday.”

Staff at Bunters Bar on Little Castle Street were mopping up their office after water poured in, but said the bar area was unaffected.

Manager Chris Wilson said: “It was really quick; within 10 minutes of it being really bad the water had gone again.

“Bernie at the Cornwall Boogie Woogie shop on the corner is in there bailing out, his shop has been flooded.

“It was absolutely pouring it down at about 10am and a manhole cover popped off and water was going everywhere.”

Owner of Attla Snowboards on Little Castle Street, Billie Royle said they’d avoided flooding because the water was rushing down the road so quickly.

She said: “The water is flooding so fast it just went straight through. When cars come around the corner it was making waves which was the worst part, it was lapping up against the shops.

“The postman has been and said that Victoria Square is definitely the worst affected.”

The torrential rain also forced staff to remove part of the ceiling on an isolation ward at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske, forcing staff to move patients.

The flat-roofed part of the building behind the maternity centre shrunk in the heat on Wednesday, exposing a crack.

The heavy rain during the thunderstorms on Wednesday night soaked into several ceiling tiles which were taken out on Thursday morning.

Four patients in the bay were moved to another isolation unit in the hospital.

Staff hope that the ceiling and roof will be repaired by Thursday afternoon to put the bay back in operation.

“How about the new advert for the new "Subway Sub 6 inch of the day"?

On a serious note, the council were warned what would happen if they tinkered with Victoria Square, which is prone to flooding, they didn't listen, and now it just goes to show they never learn.”
