Penryn plunge deeper into relegation trouble
Penryn 5 Paignton 21
Penryn slipped further relegation trouble as the visitors scored three second half converted tries to complete the double over the Cornish club in the mud at the Memorial Ground.
In the only Tribute South West One game to go ahead Penryn missed the chance to move out the bottom three.
They led 5-0 at half time thanks to a well worked try touched down by winger James Martin but the Devon club took advantage of the sin-binning of home flanker Jordan Rose to score 14 unanswered points and a third try right on time sealed Penryn's fate.
It had all started well for the home side as some good passing along the line ended with a great take by full-back Taron Peacock who set up Martin who touched down in the corner. Peacock, who had already missed a penalty attempt, was unable to convert.
Penryn also spurned down some kickable penalties as they searched for another try but were unable to break down the visitors' defence again.
After the break Penryn seemed reasonably comfortable as the conditions deteriorated in the persistent heavy rain.
But when Rose was yellow carded for tackling a player in the air Paignton took full advantage with prop Mark Palk been driven over for try near the posts which scrum-half Andy Sandercock easily converted.
And five minutes later Paignton right wing Matt Crosscombe broke away for their second try with Sandercock again converting to leave the home side with a mountain to climb with ten minutes to go.
Penryn tried to come back in the conditions it was near impossible and the final minute Paignton centre Mark Tichias went over for their third try which was superbly converted from wide out by Sandercock.
The defeat was Penryn's fifth at home this season and with seven games left they face a huge fight not to make an immediate return back to Western Counties West.
