Penzance lifeguards join campaign for regular eye checks
LIFEGUARDS in Penzance have joined a nationwide campaign urging the community to look after their eyes.
Along with Reynolds Opticians, lifeguards from the Jubilee Pool are backing the, JUL-EYE, campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of regular eye examinations for maintaining good vision and good overall health.
They are part of an army of volunteer ambassadors across the country who are working to promote the campaign, which is backed by the Association of Optometrists.
Ken Osborn, from the Jubilee Pool, said: “We rely on good vision for the role we play looking after the community and hope to nudge people into going for an eye examination if they haven’t done so recently.

“Regular trips to the optometrist are not just important for vision correction but can mean the difference between vision and blindness and sometimes life and death.”
The campaign states that regular eye checks are also crucial in detecting signs of potentially serious problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and damage from ultra violet rays.
David Williams, optician at Reynolds Opticians, said: “What many people don’t know is that ultra violet, which can be harmful even without full sunlight, can cause damaging burns on the front surface of the eye as well as on the skin unless sunglasses with effective filtering are worn.
“Children are especially susceptible – yet national statistics show one in three parents have never taken their child for an eye exam.”
Throughout the month of July, Reynolds Opticians, on Market Jew Street, will be offering tips and advice as well as running an EYE-Q quiz to discover how much people in Penzance know about eye health and protection.
You can also take an online version of the EYE-Q quiz at whatsyoureyeq.co.uk.
