New service for stroke sufferers
STROKE services in Cornwall are set to rise from adequate to gold standard after a £500,000 fundraising campaign.
The money raised by the Phoenix Stroke Appeal will be distributed across the "stroke pathway", which begins at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, dedicated stroke units at Bodmin and Camborne Redruth Community Hospitals, and stroke carers in the community.
Its contributions have so far made possible a new service, known as Early Supported Discharge, run jointly with Cornwall Council, which allows patients to be visited in their own homes.
Phoenix chairman Rik Evans said: "I think it is really saying something that we have managed to raise half a million pounds in a recession economy. I was inspired to chair this appeal because of my family's experience when my father-in-law suffered a stroke 25 years ago.

"It's not just the treatment, but the whole attitude toward stroke that has changed since this appeal. It is tremendous, and we thank the many people who have made it happen."
Besides moving and handling equipment, the appeal has bought specialist seating, aids for breathing and swallowing, monitors and scanners; physiotherapy and occupational therapy equipment for rehabilitation and adjustment to living at home and speech and language therapy aids.
Stroke consultant Katja Adie said she was over the moon at the success of the appeal.
She said: "It is a fantastic achievement by the people of Cornwall.
"On the ground it is very positive, with therapists and nursing staff now feeling they can do their job to the best of their ability."
The appeal is still accepting donations which will go towards stroke care in Cornwall. For more information e-mail phoenix.appeal@cornwall. nhs.uk
