Pirates capture Lyons from league strugglers
WITH less than two weeks to go before the Cornish Pirates report back to the Mennaye Field for pre-season training, the club has moved to add former Moseley second row David Lyons to their list of new recruits, writes Dick Straughan.
The 27-year-old, from Wolverhampton, has been a stand-out performer in a Moseley pack consigned to fighting its battles at the wrong end of the Championship table.
And following the summer losses of locks Mike Myerscough and Matt Smith (Leeds) and Ian Nimmo (Dragons), the 6'6" and 18st frame of Lyons is likely to make an early impression at his new club.
Formerly with Coventry, Lyons gained Premiership experience during a spell at Worcester Warriors, making his debut against Harlequins in the 2008-09 season.

He joined Moseley initially on loan in the following season before making the move to Billesley Common permanent a year later.
Last season he spent a short spell back on loan in the Premiership at Gloucester and featured as a second half replacement as Moseley lost 25-17 at the Pirates in February.
Cornish Pirates Head Coach Ian Davies stated that work is continuing to recruit new players ahead of the Championship season which starts on September 1. Talks are on-going with several potential recruits but it is unlikely that the club will make any announcements before the start of next week.
Davies did, however, kill off speculation in some quarters that Strength & Conditioning Coach Simon Raynes has left the club.
Raynes is currently on holiday in his native New Zealand and will return to the Mennaye Field in time for pre-season training.
The Pirates have announced next season's ticket prices. Not only have prices been frozen, but under 16s will have free ground entry.
A season ticket guarantees entry to all Cornish Pirates Championship Stage 1 games and the three pool games in the British & Irish Cup, plus the pre-season friendly matches.
Season ticket holders also get 33% off match day travel in Devon and Cornwall with First Great Western.
Even more savings can be had by taking advantage of the Early Bird Season Ticket offer – saving £50 on a standard Grandstand season ticket or £35 on a Jewson Stand or Terrace season. Offer closes June 30.
