Pirates hammer Nottingham to reach cup semi-finals
Cornish Pirates 33 Nottingham 3
The Cornish Pirates eased into the semi-final of the British & Irish Cup with a comfortable five-try defeat of Nottingham at the Mennaye Field, writes Dick Straughan.
They will join Irish sides Munster and Leinster along with Cross Keys from the Welsh Premiership in the draw for the next round which is due to be held on January 30th.
Nottingham started here slightly the brighter of the two teams but the games remained scoreless until the end of the first quarter when Pirates Number 8 powered over the line from a 5-metre scrum for the opening try.
Rob Cook converted and then set up a second try, this time for debutant Andy Short, as he raced 60 metres before being tackled just short of the Nottingham line. Quick recycling set up Short for a simple finish.
Kieran Hallett`s penalty cut the Pirates lead to 14-3 at half-time and the game lost much of its shape as the second half progressed.
But with 64 minutes played Dave Ward rounded off a period of forwards dominance close to the Nottingham line to claim try number three.
Good approach play by Ward and Rhodri McAtee coupled with excellent linking from James Doherty and Aaron Penberthy then put replacement centre Tom Cooper in at the Newlyn Gate corner for a fourth touchdown.
Deep into stoppage time Cook seized a loose ball midway inside the Nottingham half and returned it with interest weaving his way in under the posts to score. His conversion was the final act of the contest.
