A MAINLAND brewery was this week seeking planning approval for decking to form a roof terrace on part of the roof of the St Mary's waterfront public house, The Mermaid.

A similar application for the former 19th-century shipping store six years ago was refused on the grounds of harm to the building's character and Conservation Area and neighbouring properties' privacy loss and noise issues.

Among written objections, one claimed the nearby roof garden at the Atlantic Hotel was being used as a precedent in the application. Another, in support, said a roof terrace would "enhance an already iconic establishment".
