Plans for geothermal plant at industrial estate are backed
PLANS for a geothermal plant on the United Downs Industrial Estate have received strong support from the local community, according to the company behind the scheme.
Geothermal Engineering Ltd held public exhibitions in Mill's Hall, Carharrack at the end of October.
More than 150 people attended the two-day event and 88 people completed consultation questionnaires.
Of these, 92% said they were concerned about the UK's capability to fulfil its energy needs in the long term, with 90% believing that renewable energy had a vital role to play in delivering the UK's energy needs. Overall, 89% of people attending the surgery actively supported the development of geothermal energy in their locality.

Over the next 20 years, Geothermal Engineering Ltd plans to deliver up to 300 MW of clean, sustainable electricity and up to 1 GW of renewable heat for communities across the South West.
Managing director Ryan Law said: "There is significant potential for geothermal energy to encourage investment into the region and re-empower the local community. We have received a lot of positive feedback and requests from the community and will be looking into geothermal energy for domestic use by connecting Carharrack and St Day to a district heating main. The renewable heat generated by the geothermal plant has to be used locally and will have a direct and positive impact on the local economy and community."
