Police caution for woman, 47, who made up West Cornwall attack

A 47-year-old woman who falsely claimed she had been attacked while walking along a rural road has been fined £80 for wasting police time.

The woman, who has not been named, told police she was assaulted on January 8 and an appeal was launched to find the driver of a red Honda saloon car. She had claimed the incident had occurred on the road between Ruan Minor and The Lizard, West Cornwall.

But after a detailed investigation, officers established the allegations had been made up. The woman consequently made a full admission to wasting police time and was given an £80 penalty notice order.

Detective Inspector Pete Simms said: "As part of the police investigation, officers traced a number of witnesses and completed a substantial amount of work in examining the woman's story. During these investigations it became clear that the report was false and, following interviews with the woman concerned, she admitted that she had lied to officers. This case obviously took up a significant amount of valuable police time which we can ill-afford to lose.
