Police launch drink-drive campaign with dramatic video
Devon and Cornwall Police has released dramatic video footage of a drink-fuelled collision as part of the Force's annual drink drive Christmas campaign.
The campaign, which will run throughout December, highlights the damage caused by drink driving and aims to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads.

The CCTV footage shows a drink driver crashing into the Three Elms pub in Brixham, Devon and seriously injuring landlord Kevin O'Neill.
Leigh Brennan, 45, from Brixham, lost control of his Volvo in March this year as he drove through the town at 60mph and crashed into the porch of the pub. The landlord was standing in the doorway and suffered a crushed pelvis, broken ribs and spinal injuries after being buried under masonry.

In July the driver received a 12-month prison sentence and was banned for driving for two years.
Inspector Richard Pryce, head of roads policing at Devon & Cornwall Police, said:
"The devastation caused by drink driving can be seen clearly in the CCTV footage. There was a group of people stood outside the pub just moments before the crash and it is a miracle that no-one was killed and only one person was injured.
"If you drink and drive your chances of getting caught by police are high and the consequences are life changing. As well as the potentially tragic consequences, someone who is caught drink driving faces losing their livelihood, a driving ban, a hefty fine or spending time in prison."
Officers in Devon and Cornwall will be carrying out roadside checks in the evenings and early mornings.
Inspector Pryce added "We will not tolerate drink driving at any time of the year but we will ensure close attention is being paid over the festive period. The message is simple: don't drink and drive."

“I wish people would counter other people's comments if they disagree rather than pressing an arrow and spoiling the atmosphere. Jos your argument does not stack up, of course people say they do not want to lose their license, saying the other things would be considered lunacy and thankfully a rare event. I personally have never agreed with pub car parks. What amazes me is the amount of time it takes for drink to clear out of the system meaning more people D&D than they know it after heavy sessions the night before, particularly those with an early starts”

“Another thing which disturbs me is if you ask someone who doesn't drink and drive "Why" the answer will always be "I don't want to lose my licence" NOT "I'm afraid I might injure or kill someone". How selfish can you get?”

“Also would be good to have one of those gadgets installed into anyone's car that is caught for drink driving that measures the amount of alcohol before it allows you to start the car, know it is not foolproof but would stop a fair few re-offenders that don't get banned for it.”

“It is simple, have a no drink limit because when they claim "If you drink and drive your chances of getting caught by police are high" you just know the figures are no where near the truth, they probably only catch between 10 and 20% of the people that dnd regularly and the rest carry on doing it because they really don't care about the law or the consequences.”

“The police can only give the evidence to the CPS who take it to court and then its up to the courts to pass sentence. Im sure if you ask any police officer there view, it would be that the sentencings are to small. Remember they are the ones that get to see the results of these idiots out there drink/drug driving and then have to take the news to the families. The courts are a told not to hand out long sentences as it costs to much to keep offenders locked up!
If these offenders are banned for life they will just go out and drive while disqualified and when caught, the courts will again do nothing! Its an ongoing problem with the whole criminal court system.”
