Police seek special constables and Streetsafe volunteers
DEVON and Cornwall Police has launched a campaign to boost the ranks of volunteer special constables in Newquay.
Residents have been offered the chance to make a difference to the community by volunteering to become a special constable.
Special constables are trained volunteers who work alongside regular police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).
Once selected, 'specials' complete a training programme, after which they have the same powers as regular officers and wear the same uniform.

Inspector Dave Meredith said: "This is a unique opportunity for people local to Newquay to join the Special Constabulary and work in Newquay if successful in their application and training. Newquay is a great town which has a great team of officers responsible for its policing. I am delighted that Devon and Cornwall Police has recognised the desire of local people to support policing in their local area, and make a difference to their own community."
The force is also seeking volunteers to join the Newquay Streetsafe Project.
The scheme allows a team of police volunteers to help on the ground where possible, enabling officers to deal with more serious incidents.
Volunteers must hold a D1 category on their driving licence and should be prepared to work at least eight evenings during the ten weekends that the project operates.
Mr Meredith said: "Streetsafe operates during the town's busy night-time economy periods, and provides a much-needed and valuable service to vulnerable persons. We currently have a great team of volunteers supporting this project.
"However, in order to provide resilience to Streetsafe and give it the capacity to evolve and cater for the changing needs of Newquay, we are now seeking extra volunteers from the community."
Applications for the special constable role must be completed by February 21.
