Police swoop on three men carrying air rifles

Three men have been arrested after a firearms alert was sparked by a 999 call. Police swooped on the Caharrack area of Redruth after receiving reports of three men who were seen in public carrying air rifles. A police spokesman said specially trained firearms officers were deployed to the scene within 32 minutes of the 12.45pm call-out. As a result, the three men were arrested and as the Western Morning News went to press last night were still being questioned. The spokesman said there were no injuries related to the incident and inquires were continuing.

    “Airguns in the UK are subject to the firearms acts, under the Firearms (Dangerous air weapons) rules 1969 they are classified as low powered Air Weapons and as such they are restricted to a maximum power of 12 foot pounds energy for a rifle and 6 foot pounds energy for a pistol. Air rifles above 12ft/lbs are classified as a Section 1 Firearm and requires a licence (FAC) otherwise known as a firearms certificate, and an Air pistol above 6ftlb is a prohibited weapon.”
