Pop punk pioneers' Eden date is a dream come true for loyal fans
A whole generation of rock-loving Westcountry kids grew up on the wild American pop punk of Blink-182.
From the late Nineties to the early Noughties the Californian three-piece were adored for their energy, their infectious head-banging vibes, the contemporary – mostly adolescent and often humorous – subject matter of their lyrics, and the "parental advisory" stickers on their album covers.
Anthems like All the Small Things, What's My Age Again and Adam's Song, pumped out from car stereos, bedroom CD players and Sony Walkmans across Devon and Cornwall. But if you wanted to see the band perform live you'd have to wait until one of their brief UK outings and invest in a pilgrimage to a major city or a rock-orientated festival like Reading.
So the announcement that the band have confirmed a headline date at this summer's Eden Sessions in Cornwall is something of a life-affirming treat.
Three years ago it would have been a pipe dream – Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker hung up their pogo shoes in 2005.
But in 2009, older, possibly wiser, and definitely refuelled, they decided to join the party once more.
Their Eden show on Sunday, July 8 – part of a European stadium tour – will be their first opportunity to air songs from their acclaimed sixth studio album, Neighborhoods, in the UK live arena.
Blink-182 are probably best known for their 1999 seminal album Enema of the State, which sold 15 million copies worldwide and spawned the aforementioned favourite hit singles.
It was preceded by Cheshire Cat in 1994 and Dude Ranch in 1996 and followed by 2001's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. It was a period that saw them win multiple awards on both sides of the Atlantic, including Best New Act at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards and Best Rock Act at the same ceremony in 2001.
Their self-titled fifth studio album, was released in 2003, heralding a more mature sound. Neighborhoods, understandably, continues that progression; the guys are, after all, in their mid to late 30s now, but don't expect that to curb their enthusiasm when delivering the fans' favourites.
"Blink-182 are a great coup for the Eden Sessions. The band defined the pop-punk sound of the late Nineties and early Noughties, mixing catchy guitar hooks with lyrics that tackle serious issues in a humorous way," says Martin Williams, Eden's marketing director. "We're really excited to be part of Blink's return to the top and can't wait to hear them perform songs from their long-awaited new album at Eden."
Blink-182 are the second headliners to be announced for the 2012 Eden Sessions. UK soul and hip-hop star Plan B will top the bill on Friday, July 6; more acts will be announced soon.
