Praise for public after man held on bridge
A man was restrained by members of the public after climbing onto a bridge in Bideford yesterday. Two passers-by held back the 51-year-old who was seen leaning off the Torridge Bridge, from the wrong side of the railings, at around 7.36am. He was brought back onto the safety of the bridge by police and detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. Ian Walls, a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police, praised the "quick-thinking members of the public" who held on to the man until police arrived.
