Falmouth's Premier Inn plans recommended for approval by planning officers
CONTROVERISAL plans for a 68-room hotel near Events Square in Falmouth have been recommended for approval by Cornwall Council planning officers.
Proposals for a 74-room Premier Inn on the current Discovery Quay car park, were originally refused by Cornwall Council in August.
The revised plans for the 68-room hotel, which were submitted in October by New Cornwall Development, were met with a barrage of opposition from residents and hoteliers.
Despite the opposition, planning officers have recommended the scheme for conditional approval in a report prepared for Cornwall Council’s central sub-area planning committee, which meets on Monday.

It states: “The proposal is considered to be acceptable in all other respects and it is concluded there are no other reasons to warrant a refusal of planning permission.
“The application is therefore recommended for conditional approval subject to the
satisfactory completion of a section 106 agreement.”
Under the 106 agreement, developers would contribute £63,430 towards sustainable transport initiatives in Falmouth, which would mitigate the impact of additional peak hour trips generated by the scheme.
Under a second condition, developers would also have to complete a Traffic Regulation Order, which would prevent delivery vans and lorries from blocking access to local residential properties on Campbeltown Way.
One of the objections raised by local residents was that the hotel would reduce the number of parking spaces at the busy town centre site.
The planning officers’ report added: “I understand the concerns raised locally on parking issues, but in line with my comments on the previous application on this site accepted by the Inspector at subsequent Appeal, these concerns would not, in my opinion, be grounds for a Highways objection that could be sustained.”
