A HISTORY of the Roman Catholic parish of Launceston is on sale at the new tourist information centre at Launceston.

In December Father David Annear, parish priest of the Catholic Parish of St Cuthbert Mayne, published a parish history. This tells the story of St Cuthbert Mayne who was executed in the town square at Launceston in November 1577 for being a Catholic priest.

The history also describes the founding of the parish in 1886, the establishment in 1921 of a regular pilgrimage in honour of St Cuthbert Mayne, a brief history of St Joseph's Convent, now St Joseph's School, and the Catholic Church at Bude, which forms part of the parish.

Father David was greatly helped in his work by Arthur Wills, local historian, archivist and former mayor, who had written a scrapbook in 1977 with the help of Father Bede Davis, then parish priest. Copies cost £3.
