A ROYAL Navy officer from Penzance has become the first female appointed to the post of First Lieutenant at the historic Britannia Royal Naval College.

Lieutenant-Commander Zoe Briant-Evans, who went to Humphry Davy School, will now be responsible for the running of the Dartmouth-based college, which provides initial naval training to members of the Officer Corps. She posted to the college in 2011 as a squadron officer with direct responsibility for training cadets before she was promoted.

Speaking of her role, she said: "It is a real honour to be the First Lieutenant at BRNC. Although we now have women in many roles within the Royal Navy, including in command of warships, I am very proud to be the first female officer to serve in this position at the college."

Lieutenant-Commander Briant-Evans, nee Watts, chose a career in the Navy after being a member of the Cambridge University Royal Naval Unit, joining during her final year at Anglia Polytechnic University.
