Ministers are weighing up the costs of policing a proposed cull of badgers against fears the controversial plan to combat bovine TB could cause angry protests.

Farming unions have moved to underplay fears that a targeted cull of sick animals will cause major public disorder.

Thousands of cattle in the Westcountry are slaughtered annually as a result the virulent bovine tuberculosis (TB), and farmers in the region have welcomed the coalition Government’s plan to licence shooting.

But the far South West could be the backdrop to opposition after the plan was fiercely criticised by animal rights organisations.

A series of peaceful protests have taken place across Wales in attempts to halt trial culls across the border.

Farming Minister Jim Paice has been pressed by MPs over the cost of policing culls.

If licences are given the go-ahead, Devon and Cornwall and Avon and Somerset police forces are likely to be pressed into action given the prevalence of the disease in the region.

In response to a written parliamentary question, Mr Paice said: “It is possible that any future culling operation will generate policing costs.

“However, the scale of any extra policing needed is difficult to quantify at this stage, as it depends on the extent of the threat of any illegal activity.”

Mr Paice said the issue of protests “has to be addressed”, and he stressed the Government is “talking with the relevant bodies and authorities”.

Ian Johnson, National Farmers’ Union in the South West spokesman, said opponents of the proposed cull had had weeks to voice concern before the consultation closed on December 8 and added that was ample time to comment.

“If Police intend to guard against rural crime they should spend a bit more effort policing all the illegal foxhunters who parade their crimes for all to see and bring their children up to do the same.
It is a shame that they cannot prosecute the farming unions for misinforming the public by churning out all this stuff about "culling sick animals"”

“And at an NFU meeting at Hatherly about the proposed cull, some in the audience who were lampers were quite delighted that they could find a new target, and would get the cost of their diesel and shells paid, and a few quid (cash) in their back pocket.

Absolutely none of the "we really like badgers, but..." stuff from the NFU at this meeting.

But they didn't know there were two farmers there who did not want a cull.”

“Everyone knows that a cull will not solve the problem so why they still want to go ahead with it I do not know. To do it properly they have to kill every single badger in the designated area and that is impossible as many will move away before they get caught. On top of that there are many other forms of wildlife perfectly capable of spreading any disease so they'll have to turn their attention to something else. When all forms of wildlife are extinct and there is still bovine TB where will they go then?”

“David, foxes won't be off limits to the "country set" for much longer. The tory party are determined to overturn the ban on foxhunting with hounds. First they have to deal with the badgers.”

“@ Charles (as usual) : "In the outbreak of foot-and-mouth in the Netherlands six years ago thousands of animals were vaccinated but all were later killed."
Charles haven't you noticed that ALL cattle are "later killed"? Indeed they are bred for that sole purpose, with a little milk on the way. Sorry you are so out of touch with the realities of food production. Happy new year by the way. xxx”

    “@ Ben Wales ,

well Foxes are off limits so it stands to reason that " the unspeakable in search of the inedible " will be eager to find a replacement for them to torment in legitimacy , some are not happy unless amusing themselves with the targeting and hunting down of the defenseless , it is a matter of education and breeding , I blame the parents .”

“I share these sentiments completely David.
Another point: It's so dishonest to keep talking about 'a targeted cull of sick animals' when any cull would be completely indescriminate and target ALL badgers within a given area.”

“It would seem that the "Country Set" are not happy unless killing and hunting and culling, one wonders how our ancestors managed and how the Badger has survived in our landscape for so long .
Such beautiful creatures , one would imagine that in this day and age a more successful solution be found rather than decimating our beautiful countryside of wildlife .
One is reminded of the chinese being rewarded for the number of flies they collected , they collected so many that the birds began falling out of the skies due to starvation.
All things in nature are connected we meddle at our own peril .”

“It's no good replying to Charles' rants as he lost his marbles a long time ago, best to ignore the man.
As to the issue of protests, this government is right to be worried about the cost of policing because we know that this is their achilles heel with little cash to spare for policing culls. I will be out there doing everything in my power to stop the slaughter.”

“:| The idea that ONE THIRD of UK livestock was slaughtered just in Cumbria, does not seem correct to me, but heh; very large numbers were certainly slaughtered, particularly sheep and it was exceedingly costly and stressful for all concerned; as is bTB, which is why badgers have to be culled and controlled and this disease has to be beaten.”
