Elections will get under way today to give people in Cornwall a say on how their main hospital is run.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital is hoping to secure Foundation Trust status later this year which will give it greater powers of self-governance.

As part of the process, the trust must appoint independent governors for five geographical areas across Cornwall and the thousands who have already signed up as members are eligible to vote.

There have been 37 nominations for the 16 elected seats with constituencies centred on the west of the county, central west, central east, the east and the Isles of Scilly.

Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust chairman Martin Watts urged people to have their say.

"The role of a governor is an important one, providing a direct link between the trust and our community," he said.

"Governors will engage with local members to gather their feedback and views and ensure their voice is heard by the trust.

"Our members now have the opportunity to vote for the governors they want to represent them.

He added: "I urge our members to use their vote and ensure we have high quality governors to help us deliver high quality care."

All voting will be by postal ballot which will take place between January 15 and February 4.

There will be no ballot in the east constituency as only two people, Max Hailey and Mike Nicholls, have stood for the two posts, which means they become the first two governors of the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust.

The full council will consist of 11 elected public governors, five staff governors drawn from medical ranks and five appointed partner governors.

“I have heard nothing at all about this before today.

It would have been helpful if the article gave some indication of how and where the public gets to vote, at least.”
