Pupils' donations will help foodbank for people in crisis

SCHOOLCHILDREN have been praised for deciding to use their harvest festival celebrations to support the foodbank set up for Helston and the Lizard by Mustard Seed.

Last month, shoppers at Tesco donated more than a tonne of food to it in just a few hours.

At the harvest festival at Halwin school the children donated items to the Helston and Lizard Foodbank. From left, James, Kyran, Sydney and Amelia and pre-school children Toby and Zenna, with Rachel Bray, foodbank co-ordinator.

Now almost every one of the 51 families of pupils at Halwin School, near Porkellis, have contributed to a collection of items for the foodbank. Members of the pre-school also joined in.

June Nisbet, school secretary, said: "We thought it was a worthwhile way to support the local community and make a little bit of difference."

David Williams, development manager at the Helston Mustard Seed, which set up the foodbank, praised the school.

He said: "I am so proud to be part of this community. We have had so much input from local people, it has been fantastic."

The foodbank provides emergency food supplies to individuals and families in crisis, referred and given vouchers by local care professionals. Advice is also available.
