Eden Project duo Peter Stewart, campaigns and communications director, and Rita Broe, strategic marketing director, have become Members of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) for their work on the annual Big Lunch.

The national event encourages neighbours to get together by sitting down communally and eating lunch in the street.

Peter and Rita led the management team behind the Big Jubilee Lunch in June that attracted a record-breaking 8.5 million participants around the country. Communities in 70 countries across the world also took part in the event.

Tim Smit, Eden's joint-chief executive, praised the pair and paid tribute to all who had made the event a success.

He said: "They would be the first to say it is also a fantastic tribute to the wider Big Lunch and Eden teams and all the local organisers who have pulled together brilliantly to help bring community and friendship to the UK and abroad through the Big Lunch over the last four years."
