Response was flawed
THE Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust has been castigated by an report into its handling of concerns about obstetrician Rob Jones dating back to 1997.
In a report commissioned by the trust Julie Acred, chief executive of the Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, found that in 2008 a panel identified "a lack of appropriate care", "significant surgical incompetence" and inadequate counselling of a patient.
The concerns were put to Mr Jones by the medical director who "it would appear ... was persuaded by many of [his] arguments". Action taken did not fully address the concerns.
The trust is facing legal action by former patients of Mr Jones, who was allowed to continue working despite eight reviews and many complaints.

early inquiries, which found no evidence of incompetence, lacked data to allow Mr Jones's work to be properly assessed.
confusion about who should take action exacerbated delay in assessing a risk to patients.
some advice from the National Clinical Assessment Service was not followed.
there was no evidence of the board ever being informed.
