This was a compelling journey by the contemporary dance company, featuring the mixed emotions experienced through love; be it pain, joy, romance, heartbreak or humour.

A new commission by Rambert, Labyrinth of Love combined the talents of soprano Kirsty Hopkins, Irish choreographer Marguerite Donion and award-winning composer Michael Daugherty. Striking video, extraordinary imagery and the stunning dancers added to the unbelievable fluidity.

Labyrinth of Love, the dance piece, was inspired by love poetry and prose by women spanning the past 2,000 years. The costumes were of white canvas which emphasised the concept of blank paper for a poem to be written.

Monolith had a dusty, rustic feel, set within copper mountains and sandy fossilised towers. Dancers stomped with military precision, recreating the idea of manmade construction.

L'Apres-midi d'un faune, a short quick piece, with a humorous cheeky nymph element, brought Debussy's music to life and was utterly enchanting.

The finale, What Wild Ectasy, as contemporary dance at its best, with bright psychedelic colours, exploring the mating rituals of the birds and the bees. With the dancers looking like they were at an Eighties rave, showered by hundreds of lemon balls symbolising pollen, the piece was bizarre but thought-provoking.

This sensational dance company left us feeling we had seen something truly phenomenal.
